Minigolf magic for corporate fun days

Minigolf for corporate fun days
A recent hire at the offices of Orms Designers & Architects. Being designers and architects, they created their own obstacles!

Experience has shown us that mini golf is always a hit at corporate fun days. It brings people together for networking and team building and can boost morale and productivity. Our mini golf hire courses are modular, which means they can be assembled to fit virtually any space, indoors or outdoors. The equipment is designed to fit into the footprint of a standard lift shaft, so that no matter which floor the event happens on in multi-storey buildings, getting the equipment up and down between floors is as simple as possible.

Crazy golf hire corporate fun days
A breakout area on the roof at WeWork, Momument, London

Minigolf hire is a sure fire success at team building events, annual parties, open days, staff fun days and even training days. It can also be used by management to observe employees in their natural habitat. A Morrisons manager told us:

“We used the mini golf setup with obstacles to set our managers the challenge of finding the shortest solution to get the ball in the hole, thus using the golf as an analogy to overcome obstacles in the workflow processes.”

It has also been shown to help interviewees relax on the recruitment treadmill and show who they really are. As one entrepreneur said:

““Within half an hour of entering the room, interviewees are more relaxed. What they don’t realise is that over a game of mini-golf, they’re giving off who they are as people – we get to know them better than if they were in a stale white room with a desk.” More on that here.

Minigolf can be seen as a microcosm of golf. ‘Big golf’ is famous for being a place where deals are struck and businesspeople have a chance to discover each other’s true characters. With a minigolf hire for a corporate event, you get a similar competitive environment distilled into a smaller area.

Putterfingers mini golf courses can be fully branded for corporate fun days and other business events. Tee-off mats, edge bumpers and scorecards can all carry a firm’s logo and message. This can make employees feel good about their employer as a source of fun, impresses visitors and looks professional.

Some companies chose to hire a minigolf course for a week for their breakout area, just for staff to enjoy. It helps staff to relax and get to know each other better.

Planning a BIG minigolf break

Guest Blog post by Richard Gottfried of The Ham and Egger Files.

You may be looking ahead to getting out and about a bit more and if you want to make up for lost time on the minigolf course. Here are our top tips for finding courses near you and making the most of a crazy golfing road-trip. These come courtesy of minigolf supremo and tireless crazy golf course finder Richard Gottfried. See the link at the bottom of this post to visit his amazing minigolf blog chronicling nearly a THOUSAND crazy golf course visits!

Start at home

Before your trip it’s a wise manoeuvre to map out all of the courses at your final destination. There are a number of ways to find out the best places to play.

Google is your friend

Get online and search your target location for courses to play. Remember though that not all courses will have a website or online presence so we will often search on Google Maps and Street View to find hidden places to play.

Crazy golf courses
Richard Gottfried playing Pirates Landing indoor Adventure Crazy Golf at the Fairworld Amusement Arcade in Cleethorpes 18-05-18 by Emily Gottfried

Are you keen to play all flavours of miniature golf, are you only looking to play newer adventure golf layouts, or do you prefer traditional seaside crazy golf? You’ll want to input the right keywords to get the best results. Sometimes ‘minigolf’ is used to mean Pitch & Putt courses or Putting Greens. If they’re not your cup of tea then you’ll need to be more specific if you’re looking for pirates, dinosaurs or jungle-themes.

You can also check out our blog and social media to keep up-to-date with new course openings and tips on where to play.

A classic way to plan

As mentioned, not all courses have an online presence, or if they do, it might not always appear high-up in the pages of online search results so don’t forget a classic way to plan your UK getaway is to request a brochure from a resort or town’s local tourist information centre. A lot of the courses we’ve found are those listed on maps of seasides.

The journey

Getting there is half the fun right?

Your end point may be one of those minigolfing hot-spots such as Skegness, Hastings, Great Yarmouth, Cleethorpes, Scarborough or Blackpool but there is a very good chance that you’ll be passing by any number of the new breed of inland courses en route. Why not plan a couple of stops on the way…?

Staying the course

Some hotels are home to crazy golf and putting courses and if you’re keen to maximise your playing time then this might be an option for you.

Most holiday camps and caravan parks – and some camp sites – are also home to a minigolf course. These are sometimes only open to people staying at the site, but we have found some excellent courses that are open to day guests and the public.

Pay-to-enter

You may also find that there are minigolf courses in pay-to-enter attractions in the area you are staying on holiday. Farm parks, model villages, zoos, maize mazes and other places can often be the location of a course.

Late night games

The days of courses closing when the sun goes down are gone and a number of courses now have floodlights installed to allow play to go on long into the night.

There are also a lot more indoor options now compared to when our Crazy World of Minigolf Tour began in 2006. Back then there were just two indoor courses in the whole of the UK. There are now more than 100 indoor venues to play. A real bonus if the British summer weather doesn’t quite deliver.

If you play any fun or quirky courses be sure to let us know about them!

Father’s Day Golf Gifts to Make Him Smile

Father's Day golf gifts

Does your father already have everything? Not if he is a golfer, he doesn’t. A golfer’s kit is never complete. There is always a useful piece of equipment to make his journey round the course that little bit more enjoyable and practical. These Father’s Day gifts are the things he never knew he needed in his golfing life.

Father’s Day is on the third Sunday in June. This year it falls on the 20th. We have hand picked the golf gifts most likely to be appreciated by golfing dads. They are also pretty useful things to have out on the golf course and when practicing at home, so if he golfs a lot he will think of you more often as he uses them!

Fathers Day golf gifts

Father’s Day Golf Gifts

For this Father’s Day we are stocking:

  • Training aids for improving swing, eyeline, driving distance and putting accuracy
  • Tools for the little tasks that non-golfers don’t know about, like replacing divots, cleaning club faces, counting strokes and picking up balls from the green, fairway or rough
  • Home golf sets and tools for back garden practice
  • Golf novelty items just for fun
  • Accessories like bags, towels
  • Practice balls
  • Desktop golf games for the office or home

Head over to https://www.putterfingers.com/collections/fathers-day-gifts to see the whole collection of brilliant golfing Father’s Day gifts! Here are our top five from the range.

  1. Putt and Hazard Putting Mat
Putting practice mat gift

The ideal home putting training tool for indoors and outdoors. Improves not only accuracy but putt weight as well with its slope just before the cup. The cup is a bit smaller than regulation to really hone accuracy, there are two hazards to avoid and the ball is automatically returned to the player when it goes in the hole. An all-in-one putting trainer for use in between visits to the golf club.

Golf smash bag gift Fathers Day

A swing trainer that helps to perfect wrist alignment at the moment the club face strikes the ball. The golfer stops when the club strikes the bag and checks hand alignment. Prevents a common problem called ‘flipping the wrists’ at the moment of impact.

Golf multi tool fathers day gift

A Swiss army knife for the golfer in your life. Includes a 35mm knife, divot repairer, club head brush, pitchfork/ball marker, mini pen and key ring.

Fathers day golf gifts chipping net

Practicing the feel of chipping is crucial to staying sharp on the golf course. This practice net pops up anywhere in seconds and has target pockets for honing accuracy. You might need to call him in for tea when he’s in the garden with this – he’ll be addicted!

Fathers day golf gifts laser guide

This popular device projects a laser line onto the putting surface that provides visual feedback to help keep the club head swinging straight. Allows the correction of multiple errors in putting form.

National Miniature Golf Day 2021

National Miniature golf day UK 2021

One of the pleasures of being British is doing things a bit differently from the rest of the world. Miniature Golf Day is celebrated in the USA and everywhere else on the 21st of September. But National Miniature Golf Day happens on the second Saturday in May and is celebrated by minigolf geeks around the British Isles. This year it falls on the 8th of May. To thicken the plot, the second Saturday in May is also celebrated in the USA – but some sources call it National Miniature Golf Day and others call it Miniature Golf Day. Which is great, really. Because there are two opportunities a year to celebrate our fantastic sport!

The 8th of May this year is the day to head down to your nearest mini golf course, grab a putter and take on the challenge of negotiating your ball into the hole via various obstacles in the lowest number of shots you can. To find a course near you, Google ‘adventure golf’, ‘crazy golf’ or ‘mini golf’ in your area. There are all kinds of courses ranging from big, lush theme park-style adventure golf courses featuring pirates, dinosaurs and lost civilisations to smaller, more basic courses both at the seaside and inland.

Mini golf course
That looks tricky

But googling might not show you all the courses near you. The most complete list of mini-golf courses in the British Isles is without a doubt Richard Gottfried’s blog. He and his wife Emily have been playing every course they can find for years, on what they call the Crazy World Of Minigolf Tour. At the time of writing this, they have played a staggering 958 mini-golf courses, some of which are abroad but 919 of which have been in the British Isles. The blog chronicles their adventure by recording each visit. It stretches back years, so not all the courses they have played are still there, but many will be. Best to check it’s still there before heading off to a course you see on their blog! Check out their crazy adventure here.

May is also National Golf Month – meaning ‘big golf’, i.e. golf played over acres of land with a variety of clubs and questionable fashion sense. Putterfingers have just expanded their range of golf training aids for these hardy folk. For gifts for avid golfers or to improve your own game, check them out here.

Also see out list of upcoming crazy golf tournaments in the UK in 2021. At the top level it’s a thrilling spectator sport. See how the pros do it and improve your own game by watching their tactics!

Covid safety measures

With a sport as social as minigolf, here at Putterfingers Towers we have extra work on at the moment to disinfect all crazy golf equipment before we send it out. Each putter, ball, and obstacle is wiped down with alcohol-based disinfectant. At mini golf, crazy golf and adventure golf centres, staff will also be working hard to maintain the safety and hygiene of players on their courses, whether indoors or out. At Putterfingers we now offer branded hand sanitiser stations to kit out your venue for the foreseeable future. Our hand sanitiser stations can include your logo and branding, and are available in a range of sizes.

A quick tip for safety: players should only handle their own ball and their own putter.

We recommend staying at least two putter lengths apart at all times. This inevitably leads to people sparring with putters while shouting things like ‘en garde!’ and ‘Avast, ye blaggard!’. It’s an added benefit that helps people to practice social distancing while pretending to be pirates. Minigolf is even more fun now!

The ultimate wedding mini golf course!

Wedding mini golf course

New for this wedding season! A stunning all-white wedding mini golf course with specially made wedding-themed obstacles. We have pulled out all the stops to make this the best wedding mini golf course you can hire today.

Mini golf has always been a hit at weddings. But this year we thought we’d take things up a level, so we have created the ultimate wedding mini golf course. The course is all in white, with original unique obstacles, white bumpers, white standard obstacles and white love-themed accents (love hearts, champagne flutes and hanging white kissing doves). What a photo opportunity for the couple! (Guests can play on it well into the evening too).

Wedding crazy golf hire

It is a 9-hole course with unique wedding-themed obstacles hand build in our workshop. The charming, hand crafted all-white obstacles include Congratulations (Champagne Celebration), Love (with love heart apertures and doves), Mr and Mrs, and the magnificent Church centrepiece, which we’ll get to in a moment. Mixed in with these obstacles are white versions of our standard My Minigolf plastic ones. Course edge bumpers are white throughout, in contrast to our standard blue, red or yellow bumpers. The overall effect is really dazzling and totally unique.

At the centre of the course is the white Church obstacle, which makes a stunning centrepiece and a perfect photo opportunity. It contains a white ‘Bridge’ obstacle positioned so that the ball must be putted through the church from side to side. The windows and heart-shaped apertures can be plain white or multicoloured, and LED lights can be placed inside to give a gentle glow at night. The only thing missing is a choir! The Church roof can be customised with a message of congratulations for the couple.

Mini golf wedding hire

Alternatively, if you prefer brighter colours or need something to match the decor, we have a more colourful course with 9 wedding-themed obstacles like a flower arch, wedding cake, two families united and other lovely wedding obstacles. Bumpers can be blue, red or yellow.

Whichever course you choose for the wedding, the 9 holes can be arranged to fit almost any size and shape of venue.

Minigolf Tournaments Calendar 2021

Minigolf tournaments 2021
Putterfingers Managing Director Richard competing at the British Open in 2008

Minigolf tournaments can be nail-bitingly good to watch. When the leaders are separated by a single point going into the final few holes, it’s as dramatic a situation as the back nine at Augusta on the final day of The Masters. Players take the game extremely seriously, and have everything to play for in terms of the lasting glory of a tournament win. Cash prizes are far more modest than in ‘big golf’, but that’s not the point.

Top-level minigolf has its own traditions and folklore. In the USA they play at North Myrtle Beach every year for the right to wear the coveted green windbreaker – a nod to golf’s famous green jacket. And at the British Minigolf Masters, played just off the A20 Sidcup bypass, the winner gets a tweed jacket bought at a charity shop in Southend.

The minigolf world has a healthy level of self-mockery that is far more endearing than the millionaire tantrum-throwers of professional golf.

The skill levels are off the scale at the top of minigolf. Leading up to tournaments, practice regimes can be as intense as those of PGA players. The only difference is that when the tournament is over, Minigolf players generally have to go back to their day jobs.

Golf training aids to improve your game

If you have been away from golf for a while and want to get your A-game back, there are plenty of training aids to help re-commit the feel of a good swing to muscle memory. Many are tested and approved by leading golf coaches and PGA players. And because even seasoned golfers need to keep practicing the basics, many golf training aids are suitable for all levels. Golfers at or near the beginning of their learning curves can use them to drum the right feel, weight, club angle and body posture into their shots through repetition and feedback.

From warm-up tools to putting alignment trainers, there’s a training tool to help hone every type of shot to near-perfection. Our product line-up now includes a much bigger variety of such devices for serious golfers. They can help to improve your mini golf putting, too. So read on if there is any aspect of your game you’d like to improve through regular practice! (They also make excellent gifts for any golf addicts you know).

All these products can be found at https://www.putterfingers.com/collections/training-aids. The below is just a small selection.

Pro coaches love this one. It helps to prevent the mistake of ‘flipping’ the wrists after ball impact. Place it after the impact point, take a slow swing, stop when the club head hits the smash bag, and check your hand alignment. Helps to achieve correct form and follow through.

How councils can use minigolf for activities & revenue

Local councils run a range of sports and leisure facilities and their calendars are packed with events and school outreach programmes. Engaging people of all ages and abilities with a single, inclusive sporting activity, is hard to do, but mini golf has proven to be a perfect way of achieving that. What could be more flexible than a portable mini golf course? It is compact and easy to store when not in use, fits into a standard car and takes just half an hour to set up and take down. It provides a sport that is accessible to all and can even be used as a paid activity that generates revenue. Let’s look at some ways local councils can benefit from providing this activity.

Council leisure centres

Mini golf is an incredibly inclusive activity, and provides children and adults of all abilities with the opportunity to play, enjoy, compete and excel at a sport, often for the first time in their lives.  Almost anybody can play it, including wheelchair users, young children and those with physical or mental disabilities. With minigolf, nobody is left out. That makes it ideal for events like open days, holiday clubs, parties and sporting events. It’s also a great activity in crèches and soft play areas.

Mini golf for leisure centres and schools

School outreach programmes

The game can be part of school sports outreach programmes. We regularly hire and sell our equipment directly to schools, but there is also the opportunity for leisure centres run by councils to use it if they run sports activity sessions to keep pupils active. All ages can play mini golf. It is both social and competitive, so all ages from primary to late teens can enjoy finding their own level of competitiveness and honing their hand-eye coordination by shooting for a hole-in-one.

School sports outreach council leisure centre

Holiday camps

Minigolf is an activity that does not need modifying for different age groups. It can stay where it is as those aged 5-6, 7-8 , 9-12 and upwards use it. The only thing that might change is the length of the putters (we can provide a mixture of putter lengths on request). It is also playable by pupils of any level of skill and ‘sportiness’. It does not require any special training or preparation but it does immediately engage all players as they discover that it isn’t quite as easy as it looks! It is a great addition to the range of sporting activities at Summer fêtes and holiday camps.

Holiday camp mini golf

As a revenue generator

Minigolf’s inclusivity makes it a good choice as a game that people pay a fee to play. Some games and sports might only appeal to one gender or age range or ability group, but minigolf appeals to everyone, because the objective is simple (but achieving it isn’t always so simple!) That means that as a paid activity it stands a good chance of taking healthy levels of entry fees. It can be pay-to-play as well as used in a more organised context, for example hosting a sponsored crazy golf marathon to raise cash. Local celebrities and business people are often happy to participate, which helps to swell the numbers.

Minigolf to raise funds for councils

Putterfingers minigolf courses work indoors or outdoors, so spaces like sports halls are catered for as well as playing fields and running tracks. We can also add a council’s branding to a course. This is usually on the tee-off mats, scorecards and foam edge bumpers.

Browse our product catalogue and hire options to see the courses we offer, and give us a call on 01842 337 100 for availability.

Start a mini golf hire business!

start a crazy golf business

Introducing the mini golf Business in a Box

We are now providing a mini golf hire ‘Business in a Box’ that constitutes a starter pack for anyone who wants to start a business in the events and entertainment industry, and includes all the equipment needed to start hiring out mini golf for fun and profit.

A great working environment

As well as being highly profitable, mini golf hire is a great business to be in. Customers are excited because they are planning an event. Everybody is enjoying themselves. We get a lot of satisfaction out of providing a fun activity for families, companies, charities, weddings, marketing events, conferences and exhibitions, pubs and hotels, and corporate events.

People will always need entertainment, which is what makes mini golf hire a profitable business. We have been doing it for over ten years and we’ve watched our customer base and profits soar. All we have done is run the business sensibly, put together effective packages by doing more of what works best, and been nice to people. There’s nothing stopping other entrepreneurs from doing the same. In fact, we want you to.

Low startup costs

Starting a permanent, fixed-in-one-place mini golf course is only for those with deep pockets. The costs for a land lease, landscaping, buildings, insurance, point of sale systems, signage and facilities can run into hundreds of thousands of pounds – before even paying for the actual mini golf equipment and course layouts.

To avoid these high startup costs, mini golf hire is the way to go. Our equipment can be laid out virtually anywhere, indoors and outdoors. It’s modular, so you fit it together to suit each particular venue. It can be anything from one single hole to 18 holes. And it is easily transportable. A complete kit from us fits into an average family car. What you get with our Business in a Box is a package of equipment that can be taken anywhere and set up in under half an hour, with very low overhead costs.

Crazy golf business
This is a complete course going out for hire in the back of a family car.

What’s in it for us (Putterfingers)?

Good question. Why would we want to help others succeed? Won’t that take business away from us?

The truth is, we’re already working flat out. Others can reach events in their local areas that we can’t get to. We are also a trade supplier of mini golf equipment. You buy the equipment from us, and we can supply you with consumables like balls, putters and scorecards over the long term, as well as sell you more equipment as your business grows. We can also provide services like website design and marketing advice to help you get noticed. So we get to make sales.

Crazy golf fun
Fun for weddings, corporate events, parties, charity fundraising, pubs and hotels

In case you’re wondering, this is not a franchise. Any equipment packages bought from us are yours to keep and there are no ongoing fees or profit-sharing of any kind. You get to keep one hundred percent of the proceeds from your mini golf hires – we just provide you with our tried and tested equipment bundles. You can trade under your own name and you don’t need to use our name or branding at all. In fact, we’ll add your name and branding to the equipment we sell you, on the tee-off mats, putting cups, scorecards, foam edge bumpers and elsewhere.

Mini golf hire business
A typical layout at a corporate event

The equipment bundles in our Business in a Box are composed of the same equipment you can see for hire and sale on our website. As part of the package, we invite you to our premises in Norfolk for a day or two to show you the equipment and give you guidance on event types, how to run them and how to get your business known in your area. We can also help you with a website and marketing if you don’t have your own.

Interested? The packages start at £4,000. We want you to succeed, so we’ll be available to talk to throughout the lifetime of your business. Give us a call on 01842 337 100 or use our contact form.
