£1m adventure golf course for Belfast

New Belfast adventure golf course

Lost City Adventure Golf Belfast

Lost City Adventure Golf are to open a new minigolf course in the Cityside Retail Centre as part of a major revamp of the Centre. Lost City already have a course in Nottingham, and they took the opportunity for another one in Belfast when they heard of the renovation of Cityside. The Inca-themed course will feature waterfalls, moving walls, musical landscaping and statues.

Cityside is expecting a boost in trade when the new Ulster University campus opens its door nearby in 2018, with a large amount of student accommodation also being built within walking distance. Around 15,000 students are expected to find themselves just a few minutes away, so footfall at Cityside should see a jump. This makes it perfect for a crazy golf leisure offering. The new minigolf attraction will create 12 jobs and will be an integral part of the £2m refurbishment and expansion of the retail centre. The revamp will add to the existing 14-screen cinema, health club, bingo club and children’s play area.

Coleen Fox of Savills Retail said, “We are delighted to welcome Lost City Golf to Cityside and be the first to offer the indoor adventure golf experience,” she said.

“It is a great addition to the already strong tenant mix within the scheme. Also, with the opening of GymCo in the coming weeks, we will be sure to see a positive knock-on effect to other retailers in the scheme, with footfall expected to increase significantly due to the exciting new leisure offerings.”

Birdies Crazy Golf to rock Peckham Feastival

Birdies crazy golf, Peckham Feastival

Popular pop-up Birdies Crazy Golf are moving again, this time to the Peckham Feastival, a food and drink extravaganza in South East London. If you plan to be in the area in November and December, the dates to be at the Feastival are every Friday and Saturday in November and from Thursday to Sunday throughout December. You can pre-book a tee-off time here.

And don’t forget, although it’s chilly out there, there’s still nothing like a round of winter minigolf. Putterfingers portable modular minigolf courses can be hired or purchased all year round. So get your thermals and woolly hat on (or move indoors) and grab a Putterfingers course for your winter events!

Is this the worst minigolf attraction ever?

When you see something like this advertised (see photo below), you think you’re in for a good family day out. After all, adventure golf parks are pretty reliable fun, so what could possibly go wrong?

Minigolf course, Belfast Titanic, crap minigolf course
Looks lovely. Let’s book!

Well, this is what one family found when they arrived at the very same ‘state of the art’ crazy golf course advertised above:

crap minigolf course
Oh. That’s a bit disappointing

Michelle Marshall, from County Down, took her daughter Arianna on a family trip to the crazy golf attraction as a treat before going back to school. But she described what they found as ‘like a playground left behind after a civil war’. Located next to Titanic Belfast, a genuinely good tourist attraction, the course lies on waste ground and is made of rotting wood with nails sticking out. The most attractive feature is a shipping container. If you were into Urban Exploration and enjoyed watching 28 Days Later, you’d probably love it, but a family with a small girl who booked a day of minigolf in good faith were so disappointed they just laughed.

worst minigolf attraction ever
A world of adventure. If you’re a rat

With good humour, Ms Marshall said, ‘It was so hideously awful my sister and I just laughed and laughed. We’d been taken for mugs by a glossy ad and no one is even embarrassed enough to try to tart the place up.’

The story is similar to the famous ‘Winter Wonderland’ attraction in Milton Keynes that closed after just a single day of business following an outcry from customers. There have been numerous such stories and they are always hilarious, but this is the first time we have seen a minigolf attraction that looks like something inside the Chernobyl exclusion zone. Look through our past blog posts to find some proper crazy golf attractions!

Continuing in a tragi-comic vein, here’s a video of Mr. Bean playing crazy golf:

Smithy wins again!

Minigolf, British Open 2016
This year’s British Open winners

In the British Open held on September 17th and 18th at Hastings Adventure Golf, Michael Smith once again triumphed, finishing 80 under par and winning by 2 shots from Adam Kelly with Will Donnelly taking 3rd. See the full results here. Over 10 gruelling rounds, Smith scored just two 3s and very nearly achieved a clean sheet at the ninth hole, dropping just a single shot there in the first round.

And here’s a bit of minigolf news from abroad:

African Minigolf Summit held in Kenya

These guys will help find the ball

The World Minigolf Sport Federation has organised a pan-African conference to discuss investment in minigolf on the continent. Representatives will attend from Botswana, Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania and Togo. A WMF representative said, ‘There are a lot of minigolf courses in different African countries, but there are also many opportunities to develop minigolf from a ‘street’ level towards a professional sport and Continental Championships in the near future.’

There are a number of products available that can be utilised both indoors and outdoors for both practice and putting.

Our Putting Edge Rope Course  is ideal to convert a room at home or a conference facility in the office to a 9 hole course to practice your putting or to run your own office event.

Even if you do fancy venturing out on the course to play BIG golf, then these flashing golf balls will help you keep your balls in sight. Designed to ‘flash’ their way around the course for up to 5 minutes, they are a real help if you have a habit of hitting in the woods flashing bright red as soon as you strike the ball!

Putting Around in Majorca

Putting Green at Majorcan Hotel
Pitch and Putt Viva Mallorca style

Our annual vacation to Majorca this Summer was met with glee as the hotel had its own putting green.

Well that was one way to describe it.  The felt needed a little TLC and whilst the trees gave a lovely cover from the sun whilst playing in the midday heat, the visitors from above had left some rather unpleasant undulations to the course – as natural as they were!

Putting in Viva Mallorca
Pitch and Poop!

The 9 hole pitch and putt was enjoyed by all the family and became a daily event on our holiday.  Hole 8 had to be the hardest climbing the hill at the back of the green and was rarely met before a roll back down…..nicely into Hole 9 which I manage to net as a hole-in-one!

Hole in One on Putting Green
That’s more like it!

Have you managed to play any crazy golf or mini golf on your holidays?

We always try to fit in a game in and on recent holidays have included a piste aptly named ‘Golf’ at Les Arcs, visits to  Legoland Windsor Mole in One Mini Golf and numerous seaside visits to Felixstowe and Great Yarmouth courses.

Hope you have enjoyed your Summer! Only 118 days until Christmas……

Introduction to FootGolf

The two football mad males in my household visited Stonham Barns Golf Centre a few weeks back to try out FootGolf.

Stonham Barns FootGolf Course
FootGolf at Stonham Barns

Having a husband that has played off a handicap in the late teens in his youth, he was keen to give this new pursuit a go. FootGolf is proving a great way to maximise revenues for golf courses across the country. Offering both FootGolf and normal golf, clubs are re-inventing themselves as FootGolf Courses too.  You can even play tournaments at this course.

I do think the Size 5 regulation football is a big ask for kids under 12. At a professional level, boys of 10 would use a Size 4 which is smaller and weighs slightly less and is more age appropriate (according to my son!).  If this was a putter you would use the length best suited to your height / frame – just saying!!

However, the competition was great as expected and my 10 year old son managed to score under par on hole 8 much to his Dad’s annoyance, but he soon got one back on the 11th!  A good round by both I think!

For some pointers on how best to play, FootGolf Romford have some useful tips on their Facebook page.  We like this tip best:

Toe-Poking: the trusty toe-poke allows players to control the speed of the football better but accuracy often suffers. The best way to toe poke is to stand directly over the ball, read the putt and adjust your direction before pulling your foot back and kicking the football with the big toe part of the boot. A cm off to the left or right of the centre of the football and you’re likely to end up a good bit off target.

We will definitely be back again and this time I am playing around on the Mini Golf Course.  I have heard there are some shops too!

Avoid the hosepipe ban by hiring a portable mini golf course for your golf practise

As much as half of England is now facing a drought that will continue into the autumn at least. Many golf and cricket clubs will face a ban on using water to maintain the playing surfaces, specifically for those that do not stage international or national fixtures.

Exemptions are in place for grass and surfaces used for national and international sports which means the Olympic and Paralympic games will be unaffected.

So your golfing activities need not be put on hold due to brown and not so lush greens and fairways!  Our portable mini golf courses are available for hire all Summer long and there is no need to water or mow to keep these in tip top shape!

A great way to ensure your practise green stays green!

Our golf courses are assembled quickly and require no tools or any real skill to set them up.  If you are good at jigsaw puzzles then a Putterfingers mini golf course will suit you fine!

Why not consider a hire over the Summer period?  Running a party for the Jubilee, want something to keep the children entertained over the 6 week school break, getting married – our crazy golf courses fit the bill for all these occasions.
